In Second Grade emphasis is put on developing creative thinking skills and in encouraging students to be self-motivated. They are asked to be increasingly responsible for their own learning and to explore beyond the curriculum. To accomplish this, focus is put on being responsible for their use of time, in completing work on time, and in correcting work. Social skills are put in the context of God’s will in regards to our relationships with others.

Religion

Students grow in their knowledge of Old and New Testament Bible stories increasing their understanding of God’s purpose in the lives of His people. They also memorize verses from the Bible that correlate with their lessons and portions of the Catechism, including Luther’s Morning Prayer, the Commandments and Apostles Creed. Devotions are a part of the morning opening.

Language Arts

Reading
Using the Invitations to Literacy and Phonics, students will progress in fluency and comprehension while reading both fiction and non-fiction. Children will build on skills developed in earlier grades and develop their love for reading.

English
Student’s will learn about correct speech and writing supporting many of the skills learned in the reading curriculum such as sentence structure, capitalization and punctuation.

Spelling
Spelling consists of a new unit each week which focuses on particular spelling patterns. Children are given opportunities to extend their spelling skills with expanded lists that are theme-based. Children have the opportunity to qualify to represent Our Savior School at a regional spelling bee held each spring at Lutheran High School in Mayer.

Handwriting
We use the D’Nealian method of handwriting. Students will learn to use dictionaries and the thesaurus to enhance their writing skills. In the handwriting curriculum, they review the manuscript alphabet and begin using cursive writing.

Music

Second grade children continue to develop their use of musical elements; rhythm, melody, timbre, tone color, and form. They are introduced to notation and the use of solfa syllables to develop their awareness of vocal intonations. The continued use of songs, poetry, stories, movement, and Orff instruments further the children’s ability to make and enjoy music.

Math

Children will understand the complexities of numbers and the ways numbers are used in their world. They will recognize number patterns, order numbers, learn to round and estimate numbers, read graphs, identify and count money, including making change. The children will work on addition and subtraction facts and understand place value. They will develop their skills in counting forwards, backwards, and use skip counting to introduce multiplication and division. They will learn to add and subtract three digit numbers with regrouping, tell time to the exact minute, and increase their understanding of fractions and geometry.

Science

Children will explore the wonder of God's world and strive to care for it. They will learn more about habitats and the animals and plants that exist in them. They will also understand the forms of matter and their qualities, observe light and color and how they work, acquire and use process skills for science inquiry, and learn the importance of good nutrition, exercise, and sleep. They will explore the world of fossils and dinosaurs.

Art

Children explore art as a multi-dimensional human activity. Second graders use various media of art, recognize works of various artists and historic styles, understand and use the elements and principles of design, analyze works of art and styles, understand how art is a part of their lives, and feel comfortable expressing themselves through visual media.

Social Studies

Children will realize that personal actions make a difference in the world. They will understand and appreciate our country, its history, geography, democratic values, traditions, and multiculturalism thereby becoming responsible citizens. They will understand people gather together in neighborhoods and communities. Students will read and use various maps, graphs, diagrams and charts. Units increase their appreciation of our country’s heritage and its past while learning about our nation’s capitol and government.

Technology

Children will gain confidence with our technical world and gain skills in the use of the computer. They do this through the development of keyboarding skills and identifying and using various parts of the computer and resources on the Internet. We use Learning.com Online Teaching Technology.
