What are podcasts?
Podcasts are audio broadcasts created and stored digitally on the Internet. Instead of being broadcast over the airwaves once and lost, like with traditional radio, podcasts were created to be stored and played at the user’s convenience. Think of them as radio shows waiting to be downloaded.

If you’re interested in a more thorough explanation of podcasting please check out the listing in Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcast.

How do I get started with podcasts?

Getting started with podcasting is easy. All you need is a computer with an Internet link and a portable media player. In fact, if you don’t have a portable media player you can listen to podcasts right on your computer.

The first step will be to chose and install an application on your computer, called a podcatcher.   There are many programs available for this but below I’ve provided information and links to three of them.  Any one of these should work for receiving podcasts from Our Savior Lutheran Church.

iTunes

iTunes from Apple Computer is available for both Mac and Windows and is one of the most commonly used applications for subscribing to podcasts.  Information on downloading and using iTunes may be found at http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/.  Look for the “Download Now” link on that page
Another good resource for step-by-step instructions on how to subscribe to podcasts in iTunes may be found at http://www.infopeople.org/resources/itunespodcasting.html.
Yahoo! Music Engine

The Yahoo! Music Engine (YME) also supports podcast subscriptions and runs on Windows XP or 2000.  If you’re familiar with the Musicmatch user interface this may be the application that works best for you.  You can find out more about getting started with podcasting and download YME at http://podcasts.yahoo.com/install.

Juice (formerly iPodder)

Juice is an open source podcatcher that runs on Mac, Windows and Linux.  You can find out more information and download Juice at http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/index.php.

How are these podcasts created?

Podcasts from Our Savior Lutheran Church are recorded to a CD-R each week.  The audio is then ripped from the CD and mixed with some music, tagged and loaded as a podcast episode.

Older recordings in this podcast series were made from analog recordings captured on cassette tape during our 8:00 a.m. service and are then converted to MP3 files.  We apologize for any problems you may experience in the audio quality on those older recordings.
